A comparison of two techniques to discriminate continental origin of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) off West Greenland ArchiMer
Reddin, David; De Pontual, Helene; Prouzet, Patrick.
Two techniques of stock discrimination both utilizing scales, i. e. termed as classical technique and shape analysis, are compared for discriminating between North American and European Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) caught off West Greenland. Three scales from each of 60 salmon were analyzed: 30 from North American and 30 from European-origin salmon collected from home rivers in 1982. The best results indicated misclassification and error rates of 0% for shape analysis and 5.0% and ± 1.7%, respectively, for the classical technique. A nested ANOVA indicated that variation was greater between scales of salmon of North American and European origin than from several scales from the same salmon. It was concluded that shape analysis with computer-aided...

Comparison of shape analysis methods for Guinardia citricarpa ascospore characterization Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Pazoti,Mário Augusto; Garcia,Rogério Eduardo; Cruz Pessoa,José Dalton; Martinez Bruno,Odemir.
Among the diseases affecting the commercial citrus production, the citrus black spot (CBS) is considered to cause substantial losses. The analyses of particles in suspension in the orchards and collected into a disc have been applied as a preventive action trying to identify the presence of fungus spores before symptom appearance. In this paper, we show the results of several shape analysis methods applied to the fungus, the first step to the aimed computer aided vision system, capable to assist the identification process. Experiments and comparative results among the methods are presented in this paper, showing that better results were obtained applying the curvature method

Morphological Variation in the Seahorse Vertebral System International Journal of Morphology
Bruner,Emilano; Bartolino,Valerio.
The vertebral system in Hippocampus hippocampus is highly specialised because of the vertical locomotion and tail prehensility. The vertebral elements represent a special case of morphological changes, being the metameric structures organised along a natural functional series. We investigated the shape changes along the vertebral spine in H. hippocampus through geometric morphometrics, in order to describe functional and structural patterns. Actually, the dorso-ventral tail bending ability in the genus Hippocampus is one of the most impressive morphological modifications in the evolutionary history of fishes. Vertebrae were analysed using a 2D configuration from the left lateral view. The variation along the vertebral series suggests the identification of...

Ontogenetic trajectories and hind tibia geometric morphometrics of Holymenia clavigera (Herbst) and Anisoscelis foliacea marginella (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Coreidae) Neotropical Entomology
Rodrigues,Daniela; Sanfelice,Daniela; Monteiro,Leandro R.; Moreira,Gilson R.P..
Holymenia clavigera (Herbst) and Anisoscelis foliacea marginella (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Coreidae) are distributed in southern Brazil and belong to the poorly studied tribe Anisoscelini. Preliminary observations indicate an ample coexistence of these species in terms of host-plant use. There is also a strong similarity regarding egg and nymph morphology. We characterized and compared their ontogenetic trajectories by means of growth curves and multivariate ontogenetic allometry, since the only apparent difference between these species is a remarkable growth in the hind tibia of A. foliacea marginella. Because their hind tibia is similar in the early instars, the shape variation of this structure was quantified by the thin plate splines function with the...

Sources de variation intra-populationelle de la morphologie des otolithes: asymétrie directionnelle et régime alimentaire ArchiMer
Mille, Tiphaine.
Otoliths are calcified structures located in Osteichthyes’ inner ear that are involved in audition and balance. Their morphology is used as an indicator of various ecological processes or properties. This application requires identifying the endogenous and exogenous factors that act simultaneously as sources of shape variation. This thesis aims at detecting and quantifying the relative contributions of directional asymmetry and diet to otolith shape variation at the intra-population level. Directional asymmetry between left and right otoliths was found in flat-fishes, the blind-side otolith being always longer and larger, whereas it was negligible in round-fishes. However, asymmetry amplitude never exceeded 18 %, which suggests evolutionary canalization of...
